JIMÉNEZ DEREDIA
IN SAN JOSE
Jiménez Deredia – The Strength and Universality of the Sphere – February / July 2019
From February to July 2019, the Municipality of San José, Costa Rica, hosted an exhibition by artist Jiménez Deredia entitled “Jiménez Deredia in San José: The Strength and Universality of the Sphere.” The exhibition featured twenty-seven monumental outdoor sculptures in marble, granite, and bronze, starting at Calle 2 Boulevard, continuing along Avenida Central Boulevard, and passing through Plaza de la Cultura, the National Theatre, Plaza Juan Mora Fernández, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, before culminating at Plaza de la Democracia.
At the same time, the artist exhibited medium- and small-scale works at the Museos del Banco Central of Costa Rica and the Jade and Pre-Columbian Culture Museum, offering citizens insight into the artistic and philosophical vision underlying his work.
It is worth noting that San José has long been a point of reference for Jiménez Deredia, dating back to his 1987 exhibition at the Museos del Banco Central. “Jiménez Deredia in San José: The Strength and Universality of the Sphere” therefore marked an important homecoming for the Costa Rican master.
