JIMÉNEZ DEREDIA
IN SAN JOSE
Jiménez Deredia - The Force and Universality of the Sphere - February/July 2019
From February to July 2019, the Municipality of San José, Costa Rica, held an exhibition by artist Jiménez Deredia entitled "Jiménez Deredia in San José: The Strength and Universality of the Sphere." For the exhibition, 27 monumental outdoor works in marble, granite, and bronze were displayed, beginning on Calle 2 Boulevard, continuing along Avenida Central Boulevard, passing through the Plaza de la Cultura, the National Theater, Plaza Juan Mora Fernández, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, all the way to Plaza de la Democracia.
At the same time, the artist exhibited medium- and small-scale works at the Museums of the Central Bank of Costa Rica and the Museum of Jade and Pre-Columbian Culture, with the aim of introducing citizens to the artistic and philosophical thought that underlies his work.
It is important to note that San José has been a point of reference for Jiménez Deredia since he held the exhibition at the Museums of the Central Bank of Costa Rica in 1987. “Jiménez Deredia in San José: The Strength and Universality of the Sphere” therefore represents an important return to his native country.
