Deredia in Rome - La Ruta de la Paz
The Roman Forum, and more precisely the Via Sacra (Sacred Way) that passes through it, for the first time in history is host to contemporary creations. From the 23rd of June until the 30th of November 2009, the exhibition “Deredia. The Genesis and the symbol” presents, between ‘Arco di Tito’ and ‘Curia del Senato’, eight large sculptural groups in marble by the Costa Rican sculptor Jiménez Deredia. The sculptures exhibited in the Forum make up a part of La Ruta de la Paz, the Artist’s own project with the vision of placing nine monumental sculptural installations in as many countries along the American continents: from Canada to the Tierra del Fuego, passing through the United States, Mexico, Yucatan, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru and Chile. The project visualises a symbolic “red thread” all along the Americas creating a link between populations and legends, myths and traditions, life and symbols.
At the same time, the exhibition “Deredia. La Ruta de la Paz” will take place at Palazzo delle Esposizioni from the 23rd of June until the 13th of September 2009 where the pan-American project can be better appreciated in its finer details and almost in its entirety. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni plays host to the architectural models, the related sculptures reproduced to scale and some of his monumental works in bronze.
Other monumental sculptures by Deredia are situated in a handful of public areas: the area immediately around the Coliseum, Piazza Barberini, Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina, the Museo Nazionale Romano at Palazzo Massimo and the Museo Nazionale Romano at the Palazzo Altemps.
The event, which has been awarded the High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy, is sponsored by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, the Special Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Rome, the Municipality of Rome and by the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo.
